How is Kraft Manufactured?
The process of making kraft paper goes through several steps:
Pulping
The manufacturing process of kraft paper involves a chemical pulping method that uses a solution called “sulfate.” This process helps retain the long and sturdy fibers from the wood, resulting in a paper with excellent tear resistance and strength.
Screening and Washing
After pulping, the mixture is screened to remove any impurities and uncooked wood chips. The resulting pulp is then washed to remove the residual chemicals and by-products of the pulping process.
Bleaching (Optional)
In some cases, depending on the desired final color and properties of the paper, the pulp may undergo a bleaching process to further remove any remaining impurities and achieve the desired brightness.
Paper Formation
The washed pulp is mixed with water to form a slurry. This slurry is then poured onto a moving wire mesh conveyor called the “forming section” of the paper machine. As the water drains through the mesh, the fibers begin to bond together, forming a continuous mat of wet pulp known as the paper web.
Pressing
The paper web is pressed between large rollers to remove excess water and increase its density.
Drying
The partially formed paper is then passed through a series of heated rollers to remove the remaining water content. The heat applied during this process sets the paper’s fibers, giving it its final strength and rigidity.
Winding and Cutting
Finally, the finished kraft paper is wound onto large rolls and may be cut into various sizes and formats, depending on its intended use.
